dexdouglasWelcome to City of the Big Shoulders: A 2-4 player heavy strategic game about being an investor in Chicago after the Great Fire of 1871. The game lasts [red]5 rounds[/red], and each round represents a decade. Your job is to earn the most [green]money[/green] as an investor by investing in companies and fulfilling contracts using savvy worker placement and market manipulation. 2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
dexdouglasThis tutorial will take you through all [blue]5 phases[/blue] of a round. The [blue]Stock Phase[/blue], the [blue]Building Phase[/blue], The [blue]Action Phase[/blue], the [blue]Operating Phase[/blue], and the [blue]Cleanup Phase[/blue]. We will only be going through [red]Round 1[/red], so there's much more to discover when you complete this tutorial. 3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
dexdouglasYour first move is to select a starting company and price. There are a few things to consider when selecting a company, so I'll go through some of the iconography on a company charter. 1company_brunswick62081900c497900
dexdouglas[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_q5dpTX.jpg[/img]
A. The Company Name (Brunswick)
B. The Type of Company (Dry Goods)
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_9GubgI.jpg[/img]
C. The Company's starting appeal (1 Star)2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62081900c497900
dexdouglasD. The sale price of each good the company produces.
E. If you have a salesperson, the sale price of each good increases as shown for each salesperson you acquire.

dexdouglasF. If you have a Manager employed in a factory, then when you run it, it will give you a special effect. In this instance, it will allow you to get 2 cubes of any color from Haymarket Square.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_pn91i0.jpg[/img]4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62081900c497900
dexdouglasThe type of goods you produce indicate what row you can sell goods into. For our Brunswick example, *Dry Goods* can be sold in this row. This area is called [green]*Demand*[/green].
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_WzjK5E.jpg[/img]5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62081900c497900
dexdouglasThe Company's Appeal (Star rating) is indicated on the *Appeal Track* on the left side of the board. The higher the company's Appeal, the more popular the company is, which dictates the turn order in which you can buy resources from the [red]*Supply Chain*[/red] and sell goods to fulfill [green]*Demand*[/green].
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_uvisyK.jpg[/img]
6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62081900c497900
dexdouglasThe Appeal Track also grants bonuses when you *land on or pass over* certain spaces. These bonuses are [red]NOT granted[/red] if your company starts on, or past, those bonus spaces. 7archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62081900c497900
dexdouglasIn this example, you can see that the Swift company marker started at 3 Appeal so they do not get the bonus of free employee from this track.
The Appeal Track is described in greater detail on *Page 10* of the rulebook
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_kMwyeU.jpg[/img]8archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62081900c497900
dexdouglasLet's select Brunswick-Balke-Collender Co. Once we do that, we can select a starting price per share of 35, 40, or 50 dollars. You only have 175 dollars to spend in the beginning of the game, and you need to buy the Director's Certificate to begin, which is worth 3 shares. Let's go for the middle and pick a 40 dollar starting price.9company_brunswick62081900c497910page-title 1 company_brunswick 16
dexdouglasThis is the [blue]Stock Phase[/blue]. What we do here is decide what we would like to sell and then buy. The first step in the Stock Round is deciding to sell. Since we have no shares to sell, click the "Skip to Buy" button.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62081907d36d810skip_sell 1 money_79645950 1
dexdouglasNow we can choose to buy a share certificate. We are going to buy one of Brunswick.
Certificates are worth 1, 2, or 3 shares. The Director's is worth 3, the Preferred is worth 2, and the Common Certificate is worth 1 share. You can never own both the Director's and the Preferred Certificate of the same company.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_gRvTQq.jpg[/img]1archiveCommentElementPointerTargetInner6208190de2c3100
dexdouglasOur opponent bought a share of our company too! The money from the sale of shares is placed into the Company funds. This is different from YOUR money as the investor. At the end of the game, the only thing that matters is how much money YOU have. Not your companies. 1company_brunswick6208192897e3800money_brunswick 1
dexdouglasIn the [blue]Stock Phase[/blue], each player takes turns [green]Selling[/green] and/or [red]Buying[/red] shares. If you pass on both of these actions but another player continues doing these actions, you will be given the opportunity to [green]Sell[/green] and [red]Buy[/red] again. The [blue]Stock Phase[/blue] only ends when all players pass in the phase. 2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6208192897e3800
dexdouglasDuring a [green]selling[/green] turn, you may sell as many shares as you own of a single company (except a Director's Certificate). Each share sold reduces the company's stock value one step on the *Stock Track* (on the right side of the board).
Remember, a Preferred certificate is worth 2 shares, so it decreases company value 2 steps on the stock track.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_3JUhIf.jpg[/img]3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6208192897e3800
dexdouglasWhen it comes to [red]*Buying*[/red], you can only buy 1 certificate per turn and you can never buy a certificate from a company that you have previously sold in the same [blue]Stock Phase[/blue]. 4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6208192897e3800
dexdouglasWe don't have enough money to buy any certificates, and we don't want to sell Brunswick certificates at the moment, so let's just click "*Pass Stock Action*" and skip the selling and buying part of our turn. Our opponent will also "*Pass Stock Action*" and end the [blue]Stock Phase[/blue]. 5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6208192897e3810stock_pass 1
dexdouglasEach player passed so now we move on from the [blue]Stock Phase[/blue] to the [green]Building Phase[/green]. If you want to keep track of the phases, check the bottom right corner of the board. This also shows the turn order for the next phase, the [red]Action Phase[/red].
The blue player (us) will go first.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_zoEqeR.jpg[/img]1building_area_79645950_item_building2_376208192f7706900
dexdouglasIn the [green]Building Phase[/green], you will be selecting Buildings (action spaces) from your hand to populate the board. This variability means that each game will be different as it is random which buildings get dealt for each game.
Any Buildings/spaces your *Partner* visits will grant a benefit to one of the companies you are the Director of. 2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6208192f7706900
dexdouglasSelect the Manager building to play (1st) and the Salesperson to discard (2nd). Then click confirm. The remaining tile stays with you until you discard it in a future round.
*Hovering over the buildings will give you info about the tile, and page 35 of the rulebook goes into greater detail on each one.*
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_wOzfFG.jpg[/img]3building_area_79645950_item_building11_356208192f7706910building_area_79645950_item_building11_35 17 building_area_79645950_item_building2_37 18
dexdouglasNow we've moved into the [red]Action Phase[/red]. This is when we place our *Partners* and gain benefits for our companies. Each player starts with two *Partners* that they can place on buildings to trigger their effects. You also have the ability to earn 3 more *Partners* as the game progresses.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_njv7u5.jpg[/img]1building96208195fbc07000
dexdouglasYou can earn 1 Partner by advancing to 9 Appeal.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_CfvZLj.jpg[/img]2player_board_796459506208195fbc07000appeal_4 16 building_track_90653752 16 brunswick_factory_2 16
dexdouglasAnother Partner from running all of the factories on your company charter.

dexdouglasAnd everyone earns a partner as soon as the 3rd round starts.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_LeP1sC.jpg[/img]4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6208195fbc07000
dexdouglasWhen you place Partners on Buildings, there is some info you should know.
The Upper-right corner indicates how much money it costs to take this action (30 dollars). This is almost always paid by your company, never by you, as the investor.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_ftYcgN.jpg[/img]5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6208195fbc07000
dexdouglasThe upper-left corner indicates that the Company (the Charter symbol) pays the Player (the tophat symbol) who owns the building. The player who owns the building is known by the row that the building is placed in (in this case, the [red]Red[/red] player).
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_ftYcgN.jpg[/img]6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6208195fbc07000
dexdouglasFinally, the bottom-right corner will either have 0, 1, or 2 employee pawns on it. This indicates that when this building is placed on the board, that many employees enter the "Hire an Employee" space (I'll show you that space in a moment).
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_ftYcgN.jpg[/img]7archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6208195fbc07000
dexdouglasOur opponent played the "2 Appeal" building. This is very helpful for us, so we'll place one of our 2 Partners on this space. We now need to select Brunswick as the company that we want to gain this benefit. Right now we are a Director of 1 company, but if we had multiple companies, we would have to choose which one gets the effect. 8building96208195fbc07010building9 17 company_brunswick 18
dexdouglasOur Appeal marker has moved up on the Appeal track. Remember, this denotes the order of who gets to purchase resources from the *Supply Chain* first, so if you want cheap resources, it's helpful to be higher than your opponents in Appeal.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_hg8dS7.jpg[/img]1appeal_16208196d9d9c700
dexdouglasIf two company markers are on the same space (like they are right now), the company on top breaks the tie. The last company to arrive on the space goes on top.2appeal_zone_36208196d9d9c700
dexdouglasYou can choose to take the bonus or forfeit it for 25 dollars. It's almost always beneficial to take the bonus, but there are moments when your company may really need the money or doesn't need the bonus, so it is an option. Select the gray "Employee" pawn and place it in your factory.4appeal_zone_36208196d9d9c710appeal_1 17 brunswick_factory_1 18
dexdouglasBefore your turn is complete, the game will always ask if you'd like to *Trade with Haymarket* or use *Capital Assets*. It's common to forget to hit pass but try to remember! Later, when you have resources and Capital Assets, it will be a helpful reminder. 1pass_free_action6208197540e3010
dexdouglasLet's take a look at our Factories. You can see that Brunswick has 2 Factories. We have an Employee pawn in the first factory and you need to add Employees to your factories from left to right. One Employee in our first factory means we are fully staffed. All we are missing is resources. In this case, we need 2 Brown and 1 Blue cube.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_LDjE6N.jpg[/img]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6208197540e3000
dexdouglasBy staffing a factory and having the resources needed, you will produce a single good for Brunswick (indicated by the white cylinder). In order to produce a 2nd good, you will either need to staff your 2nd factory with 3 employees and have the required goods OR automate your factory for greater efficiency. I'll explain that in a moment.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_O7GnJM.jpg[/img]4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6208197540e3000
dexdouglasOur opponent also needs employees for their factory but they're purchasing them from the "Hire Workers" space. You can buy as many employees as your company has money for but they become more expensive as they get purchased. Even if there are no employees here, you can always buy them for 50 dollars.1job_market_worker6208199de35e100
dexdouglasSome companies have space for a Capital Assets (the hammer and wrench). Lets take a look at them near the bottom of the board.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_06uRdI.jpg[/img]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620819a0f369b00capital_assets_item_michigan_lumber_16 1 capital_assets_item_union_stockyards_17 1 capital_assets_item_cincinnati_steel_18 1 capital_assets_item_pennsylvania_coal_19 1 capital_assets_item_brilliant_marketing_20 1
dexdouglasThe Captal Asset space is colored [green]Green[/green] and has an infinity symbol in it, which indicates that any number of *Partners* can visit that space in a round (similar to the Hire Employee's space).
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_6pkQ8t.jpg[/img]
When you purchase a Capital Asset, your company will pay the price indicated above the Asset to be purchased.
2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620819a0f369b00capital_investment 12
dexdouglasFor Brunswick, this "2 Brown" asset is very good to have. Lets click the "Capital Asset" building space on the board which allows us to purchase it. Then select the Company you want the asset to go to. Finally, click the asset you are purchasing so that your company spends 40 dollars.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620819a0f387010capital_assets_item_michigan_lumber_16 19 capital_investment 17 brunswick_asset 18
dexdouglasSome Assets have an *Immediate Bonus* which is at the bottom-right corner. This one comes with a *gear*, which means a free Automation. You can only Automate a space if there is already an employee there; luckily, we have one.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_U3B2Ob.jpg[/img]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620819ab8737100brunswick_automation_holder_1_0 11
dexdouglasFor every automation cylinder moved to your factory, your employee(s) will get moved one space to the right. They continue to work for you but if you keep automating, then you have no use for employees and they get pushed out of your factory, and return to the "Hire an Employee" space. 2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620819ab8737100
dexdouglas*Note, there is a visual bug that is not showing the black automation cylinder token moving out of the left-most factory. When the Automation symbol moves, it will show the additional good you produce.*
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_FrU0GC.jpg[/img]
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_DcQkGv.jpg[/img]3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620819ab8737100
dexdouglasSome Assets also have a cost, which is indicated in the upper right. This one has a cost of 10 dollars each time you use it. In the upper left, you see the symbol that indicates your [green]company[/green] pays the [red]bank[/red] for this.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_U3B2Ob.jpg[/img]4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620819ab8737100
dexdouglasNow that we have a Capital Asset. Click on the asset to spend 10 dollars and take 2 brown resources from Haymarket Square. If there weren't enough brown resources, you wouldn't get them! You can always wait to click on the Asset until there are resources available. This could even be after producing and dropping those resources back to Haymarket.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_SXyZtl.jpg[/img]1haymarket_square620819b11c6ff10brunswick_asset_item_michigan_lumber_16 11
dexdouglasNow you can pass.1pagemaintitletext620819b405b3f10pass_free_action 1
dexdouglasNow that all players have placed all Partners, we move on to the [green]Operating Phase[/green]. In the "*Advanced Variant*", we can choose to perform Emergency Fundraising. If you sell stocks from your company during Emergency Fundraising, the company will immediately go down one level in value on the stock track, plus an additional level for each share sold.
*Click Pass*1available_shares_bank620819deced5f10pass 1
dexdouglasEmergency Fundraising is only recommended in situations where you don't have enough money to purchase resources from the *Supply Chain* for your factories. Even then, it's a difficult decision. Luckily, we have enough money to buy what we need to run our company. 2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620819deced5f00
dexdouglasTime to buy some resources! We need a blue in order to run our first factory, and we will also buy 2 pinks. If the resource you want to buy isn't available to purchase, you can always trade 2 of one color into Haymarket to take something that is there. The cost of each resource is indicated above them. The blue costs 20 and the pinks cost 10 dollars each. 1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment620819eb5cbd410supply_20_item_69 1 supply_10_item_71 1 supply_10_item_72 1
dexdouglasNow you can see our factory is highlighted in RED and we have the resources and workers (or automation) required to produce goods, so click the factory and lets get some goods!1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62081a071e32c10
dexdouglasWe have generated 2 goods on our company sheet. One from the factory, plus an extra one since it was automated. We can distribute them to any of the *Demand* spaces in that company's goods row for 80 dollars each.1demand1062081a0d9669d00demand1 1 demand10 1 demand18 1 good_163 1 good_164 1
dexdouglasWhoever completes the *Demand* earns the bonus listed in the money bag at the top of the column. The right one gives you 50 dollars, the middle one gives you 20 dollars, and the left one has no bonus.2demand1062081a0d9669d00demand1 1 demand10 1 demand18 1
dexdouglasIn this example, the right most *Demand* is an X so we can't distribute goods there. We can't complete any of the *Demands*, but we can put 2 goods on the middle one. Click the *Demand* space twice. Then click "Confirm."3dry_goods_2062081a0d9669d10appeal_3 9
dexdouglasOnce you operate and earn a profit, you can choose to dispense that profit amongst the shareholders by selecting "Confirm" or keep all the profit within your company by "Withholding". 1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62081a192b64d00
dexdouglasDistributing gets more money into your hands as the player, but sometimes you need to withhold so your company has money to do actions in the next rounds. Withholding decreases the share price by one step. Confirming will increase your share price depending on your current share price and how much money you earned.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62081a192b64d00
dexdouglasOur current share price is 40 dollars and we have earned 160 dollars. Normally, your share price will increase 1 step if you earn AT LEAST your share price (40 dollars in this example). If you earn double your share price, you move 2 steps up in share price, and triple moves you three steps. 3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62081a192b64d00
dexdouglasThe only exception is that if the share price is *below 60* dollars, you can only move up 2 spaces in the share price, regardless of your earnings.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_iGa3WV.jpg[/img]
*Page 29 of the rulebook has more examples*4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62081a192b64d00
dexdouglasClick "Confirm" and you will see that money goes to us, our opponent, and the company. The earnings are divided equally amongst all shareholders. We own 40%, our opponent owns 10%, and the company still has 50% of the shares. 160 dollars in earnings means 16 dollars per share. Remember, we earned 160 dollars because we sold 2 goods for 80 dollars each.5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62081a192b64d10confirm_dividends 1
dexdouglasOur opponent also produced two goods with the Swift company and was able to use them to complete the *Demand* tile in the rightmost space. That earned them a bonus 50 dollars in addition to their 50 dollars per good. 150 dollars will get dispensed among Swift's shareholders.1demand462081a662987800
dexdouglasYou can see that a space in the *Supply chain* is empty. When this happens, the goods slide to the right to fill the empty space. Any empty space on the left gets filled with the goods from the X space on the left, then the X space gets filled with goods from the bag. Then it's the next players turn. 1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62081a6a590bf00supply_10 1
dexdouglasNow that the resource market has been refilled from the bag, and all of the companies have operated, this Operating Round is over and we move to the [blue]Cleanup Phase[/blue].
*NOTE:* You can see here how many goods are currently in the bag above the X space.
The total quantity of goods in the game is listed in this image:
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_1VZB6R.jpg[/img]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62081a6a5a0f200bag 1
dexdouglasIn the [blue]Cleanup Phase[/blue], a few things happen. First, in the *Supply Chain*, the rightmost space in the market is emptied, and the goods shift again to fill empty spaces. 3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62081a6a5a0f200
dexdouglasThen, the rightmost asset gets removed and all assets slide to the right, becoming cheaper. A new asset gets placed in the leftmost space.4capital_assets_item_union_stockyards_1762081a6a5a7bd00capital_assets_item_union_stockyards_17 1
dexdouglasFinally, any completed *Demand* tiles (like the livestock or X space) get removed and any empty spaces are filled in by moving tiles to the right and dealing new ones to the left. The # of *Demand* tiles and Capital Assets in the game is limited and may run out near the end of the game.5maintitlebar_content62081a6a5a7bd00demand1 1 demand4 1
dexdouglasThe last area I want to address is the *Public Goals*. These are optional in the game setup, but if selected, 5 random ones are placed at the bottom of the board. You can hover your mouse over to see what they do or review *page 34* in the rulebook
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___snipboard.io_I9jZEC.jpg[/img]6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62081a6a5b21e00goals_item_98526079 1 goals_item_98526086 1 goals_item_98526081 1 goals_item_98526083 1 goals_item_98526085 1
dexdouglasEvery player who completes a *Public Goal* will earn 200 dollars per goal. Ties are friendly, so each player can earn an additional 1000 dollars by completing all of these! 7archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62081a6a5b21e00
dexdouglasAnd that's the end of the 1st of 5 rounds! At the end of the game, all of your shares are converted to cash and added to your current holdings. Then you add any money earned from Public Goals you may have accomplished, and whoever has the most money is the winner!8archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62081a6a5b8ae00
dexdouglasThere is a lot more to discover in the game. As the rounds progress, more powerful buildings will appear, you might start a second or third company, and you will unlock additional partners so you get more actions per round. Hopefully this tutorial gave you a good start to learn the rest of the game on your own and enjoy what it has to offer. Good luck!9archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62081a6a5b8ae00
