ClutronWelcome to the tutorial for *Herrlof*, a trick taking card game with some bidding where the first player to get [red]50 points[/red] is the winner.
Let's get to the table and I will show you how to play.1bid5001
ClutronFirst thing to notice are the numbers here in the center. Before you start playing cards you have to bid on how many tricks you think you can win. If you are right, you score a bonus *10 points* at the end of the round plus *1 point per trick you won*. If you are wrong you only get the points for won tricks.2bid14000
ClutronOne final way you can earn points is by winning only 3 or 4 tricks, in that case you score *5 bonus points* in addition to any other points you would get. To get this points you [red]don't have to bid[/red] 3 or 4, you just have to have [blue]won[/blue] 3 or 4 tricks.3bid14000
ClutronNext on our journey around the table is your hand of cards. You will get 15 cards dealt to you. There are four colored suits ([red]red[/red], [blue]blue[/blue], [green]green[/green], *orange*) with numbers from 1 to 9. There are also three copies of two special cards that I will explain later.
The 1, 3, 6, and 9 cards also have special abilities that I will explain as we go along.4my_hand_item_19000
ClutronAnd finally, over here you can see what the current trump suit is. This will be important for the times when we don't have the right colored cards to play.5played_card_trump000
ClutronLet's go ahead and start playing. With the cards we have I think we can win *6 tricks*, so go ahead and click the *6* to bid.6bid6010
ClutronOver here in the player window you can see how many tricks we won and how many tricks we bid. So right now it shows *0/6* since we have won no tricks yet, and our bid was 6.
You can also see your score as well, which currently shows as 0 stars.1board_extra_8413212061fa6b382eb9b00board_extra_88393020 1
ClutronLet's play our first card, a [red]red 6[/red] could win us a trick so let's lead with it. Also, if we win with this card, it lets us take a card from our opponent, hopefully improving our hand of cards.2my_hand_item_761fa6b382eb9b10my_hand_item_7 1
ClutronWe won the trick, and since we only have the one opponent, click their name to pick a card at random from their hand.1six_8413212061fadd27451f810
ClutronFirst you will notice we have to return a card to them, this is so they can still play all the required hands.
The *1* card we got isn't bad, it's ability is nice but hard to win with. But let's return a higher card to help improve our chances of not going over our bid. Click the [blue]blue 7[/blue] to give it back.1my_hand_item_2761fae7670aef510my_hand_item_42 2 my_hand_item_27 1
ClutronWe won the last hand so it's our turn to play first again. Let's keep going with the reds and play our [red]red 5[/red].1my_hand_item_2861fae76f8637b10my_hand_item_28 1
ClutronWe're on a roll! Let's play out our last [red]red card[/red].
Since it's a 3 card, when we play it we get to draw a card from the deck, and then return a card from our hand back to the deck.1my_hand_item_1961fc31e83d1a010my_hand_item_19 1
ClutronWe drew another 1 card. I feel pretty good about the other cards we have so let's keep the *1*, even though we could just put it right back in the deck. We'll return the *orange 4* instead.1my_hand_item_361fd32116b7e810my_hand_item_3 3 my_hand_item_8 1
ClutronWe lost that last trick, but that's fine. We will play a total of 15 tricks in a round so that means we have to lose 9 of them.
Our opponent played a *blue 9 card*, this is the highest value of the blue cards, however, it's special ability is that the loser of the trick starts the next one instead of the winner.1played_card_8413212061fd5f93e29c700
ClutronSince we have to follow the color played, and we have blue cards, that means we will be losing this trick unless we play a special card. But like I said, we have several tricks to lose, so lets play our [blue]blue 2[/blue] card.2my_hand_item_1461fd5f93e29c710my_hand_item_14 2
ClutronWe lost the trick so we get to start because of the power of the *9 card*. But now we know, since they played the *9 card*, and we have the *8 card*, they won't have any higher blue cards left in their hand. So lets play the [blue]blue 8 card[/blue] and win this trick!1my_hand_item_3461fd7c5e7683810my_hand_item_34 1
ClutronWe're doing good, but we still have a lot of hands to play and we only need to win three more. Lets switch suits and play the *orange 5 card*.1my_hand_item_3361fd8b99a288c10my_hand_item_33 1
ClutronNotice that for the first time, a card that didn't match the lead suit color was played. This can only happen when you don't have any cards of the lead suit color. When you don't have any cards that match, you can play any of your cards, and that is when the trump suit comes into play.1played_card_8413212061fd9093706d300played_card_trump 11
ClutronWhen you play a card from the trump suit, if the other card is a different color, then the trump suit card wins regardless of the value. However, if two cards from the trump suit are played against each other, then you compare values like normal.2played_card_trump61fd9093706d300
ClutronOkay, we are winning too fast! Lets switch back to blue and try to lose some tricks. Play the [blue]blue 3 card[/blue] and lets draw a new card from the deck.3my_hand_item_2361fd909371cd010my_hand_item_23 2
Clutron*Draw a card.*1three_yes61fd90ad876ea10
ClutronNice, we drew a special card! This card acts as the lowest card played in a trick, so even if a 1 is played against this, it still loses. The only exception is if more than one are played at a time, in that case the last one played loses.
Let's keep this one and return the *orange 8 card*.1my_hand_item_1061fd90b04e23a10my_hand_item_24 2 my_hand_item_10 1
ClutronSo our opponent played out a card from the trump suit, meaning he wins regardless of the values.
That also means we have to be careful with blues from now on because he doesn't have any and so we could win a trick pretty easy.1played_card_8413212061fd90cfaca0800
ClutronWe need to still lose some tricks, and we do have a *1 card*, so let's play that. We won't get to trigger it's special ability though, which is if you win with a 1 card, you get to steal a trick from your opponent. Increasing your win count and decreasing theirs.1my_hand_item_1161fd90d64d07e10my_hand_item_11 3
ClutronWe don't have anything lower this time, so let's just win the trick. Play out our *8 card* to win.1my_hand_item_561fd911b6c67d10my_hand_item_5 3
ClutronOnly one trick left to win, and 6 more tricks to play. Let's play our *special card* to lose this trick.1my_hand_item_1061fd9324acfd710my_hand_item_10 1
ClutronSo our opponent decided to play the other special card. This one just straight up destroys the trick. No winners or losers, the cards are just discarded and the person who started this trick starts the next one.
If ever two are played at the same time, the trick is still destroyed, but a new trump suit is drawn.1played_card_8413212061fd9b5eda33900
ClutronSince the trick was destroyed, we get to lead again. Let's play out the last [green]green card[/green] we have to try and win our 6th trick before we play out all our low cards.2my_hand_item_3761fd9b5edae6610my_hand_item_37 3
ClutronUh oh, he won that last trick and now we have just low cards. Lets hope he plays that lowest valued special card again. But for now we need to toss out something to be destroyed.
Since we know he doesn't have any blue cards, and a 1 card would get us 2 tricks instead of just 1, let's play the [blue]blue 1 card[/blue].1my_hand_item_2761fda188a142110my_hand_item_27 2
ClutronYes! He played the lowest value special card. Let's play our *orange 3* to win the trick.1my_hand_item_226201359ce5f7110my_hand_item_22 1
ClutronLet's *draw the card*, even if it's something that would hurt us we can just put it right back.1three_yes620135ac7fcad10
ClutronYikes, a high card is not what we need right now. We are about to win our 6th trick so we need to lose the last two. Click on the *orange 7 card* to return it.1my_hand_item_32620135afaa36e10my_hand_item_32 1
ClutronWoohoo! Play out the *1 card* to lose this trick. And then....1my_hand_item_8620135cf5c02610my_hand_item_8 1
ClutronPlay out our last special card to destroy the final trick!1my_hand_item_38620135de3465b10
ClutronNicely done!
As you can see here, we got *16 points*. 10 points for meeting our bid, and 6 points for winning 6 tricks.1overall_player_board_88393020620135df9b31000player_name_88393020 1
ClutronAnd that is it!
As long as no one has reached 50 points a new round will begin. New cards will be dealt, a new trump suit will be drawn, and players will bid again on how many tricks they can win.2button_cell_5620135df9b31001
ClutronOne final note about the trump suit, if ever a special card is drawn for the trump suit, that means that there is no trump suit. So playing cards that aren't following the lead suit would automatically lose.3played_card_trump620135df9b31000
ClutronThanks so much for playing through my tutorial for Herrlof. If you have any questions please check the BGA page for links to the rulebook.
Have fun playing!4bid9620135df9b31001
