twistoffate1Welcome to Jump Gate, explorer!
In this game, you fly your spaceship to unseen worlds in deep space via the newly invented jump gate. Each planet holds resources you must scan, mark, and harvest with the cards in your hand ("NavComp cards"), eventually leading to claiming the planet.
Each card has up to three code functions: [green]scan[/green], [blue]jump[/blue], and claim planet (orange). You may use only one function per card, at which point it is discarded.
The player with the most valuable accumulation of resources and planets wins.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
twistoffate1At the beginning of every game, each player starts at the jump gate with five NavComp cards in hand. From here a player must play a NavComp card with a [blue]blue square jump code[/blue] number matching the [blue]jump code[/blue] number of the destination planet.
Try it! Let's play the indicated *4* card to move to the planet *Higginston*.2jumpgate010myhand_item_24 17 jumpgate 1 planets_item_9 18
twistoffate1A player may take two total actions per turn, so we have one action left. Now that we're on this planet, we'll *scan* for a resource, which also lets us pick a revealed resource on the planet to *mark*.
Notes for later: Only marked resources can be *harvested* later--and uncollected resources don't count toward the score.
Thus, the action pattern is often Scan -> Mark -> Harvest to collect resources and thereby points!1scan_button61e2e0a54261200planets_item_9 1
twistoffate1To scan, your NavComp card's [green]green circle scan code[/green] number must match the planet's [green]scan code[/green] number, *2* in the case of Higginston's scan code.
We have only one card in our hand with a scan code of 2, so click that card and then the [green]green ?[/green] button at the top of the interface, which is the scan button.2scan_button61e2e0a5431d410myhand_item_6 17
twistoffate1Our scan revealed an ENERGEL[dark] resource. We can mark either that or the pre-existing FAME resource.
*Let's click the FAME resource to mark it.* It's worth five points if we collect it later!
(For a breakdown of how other resources are scored, see the rulebook or hover over that resource on the scoreboard.)
!!! Note the *black hole* icon on both of these resources. We'll learn more about what this means later.1resPlayPile_planets_item_9_item_3761e2e0aa372aa10resPlayPile_planets_item_9_item_37 1
twistoffate1Our hand has no more [green]2 scan codes[/green] to match the scan code of Higginston, so let's travel to Waldwelt, where the [green]3 scan code[/green] matches one of our NavComp cards.
[tip] We can *simply click on Waldwelt* because it's directly next to our current planet (Higginston). To travel to a planet not directly next to us, we'd need to match its [blue]blue square[/blue] "jump code."1archiveCommentElementPointerTargetInner61e2fea3c956510planets_item_12 17
twistoffate1Like we did earlier, play the matching scan code to scan this planet.
(Sorry, the [green]green ?[/green] Scan button should be Step 2, but the interface won't let me place the icon there.)
In this instance we will then mark the ENERGEL[light] card, ending our turn.1scan_button61e32b577fe1810myhand_item_45 17
twistoffate1[tip] Why are we marking the ENERGEL[light] resource? In combination with an ENERGEL[dark] resource, the pair is worth seven points! :)
Notice each player starts with two "hidden" resources labeled in our scoreboard. One of ours is an ENERGEL[dark], so we can complete that pair by *marking ENERGEL[light] here.*
Hidden resources won't be scored until the game ends; later we'll learn why.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61e32b5b5ca5b10resPlayPile_planets_item_12_item_33 2 num_cards_p87149961 1
twistoffate1The end planets are actually next to each other (wraparound style), so we can *travel from Waldwelt to Sethium* without playing a NavComp card.
Let's do it!1planets_item_661e334af2fe7110planets_item_6 17
twistoffate1Perhaps you've recognized we have a choice between these two NavComp cards that both match the [green]1 scan code[/green] of Sethium.
[tip] The left card has more functions and a *tilde* in [blue]blue[/blue]. The tilde is the "wild" symbol--you can use it as any number for that function!
Because the left card could be useful in other ways, *play the right card for a scan.*1myhand_item_1961e33543516c810myhand_item_19 17
twistoffate1Notice JackKey marked the SAND here, so that's not an option for us. Let's mark the *GEM{red}*.
We'll skip most other scans and marks in this tutorial.
[tip] Only the marking player can harvest a marked resource. Nobody can collect unmarked resources until all of a planet's resources are discovered. (More on that later!) A player cannot have two marked resources on one planet simultaneously.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61e3354a6e1da10resPlayPile_planets_item_6_item_3 1
twistoffate1We are almost out of NavComp cards, so now is a good time to replenish our hand. In Jump Gate, *the bottom action, "research,"* restores the hand to five cards.
First select any cards in your hand that you want to discard *before* you click the research button. Otherwise those cards will remain in your hand. In this instance, let's hold on to the card we have and *simply draw four more with the research button.*1research_button61e33816d482f10
twistoffate1Now let's learn how to directly *harvest* a marked resource. We can only do this if we're on a planet where we have a marked resource.
Simply select any NavComp card in your hand (ideally one you need least) and then click the harvest button, third from the top under "Actions."
In this case, click the indicated card from the hand--which is the one we're least likely to need--and then the harvest button.1harvest_button61e338a043d5110myhand_item_21 17
twistoffate1To reiterate: Now that we harvested the resource we had marked on this planet, we are allowed to mark a new one!
[tip] Although a player can scan when (s)he already has a marked resource on that planet, the game will force that player to move the mark to a different resource--no additional mark is gained.
Let's skip ahead to an *indirect* collection of a resource, which can happen on another player's turn! :o1myhand_item_1361e3587355cf100
twistoffate1Now that all resources are revealed on Higginston (indicated by "x0"), any player may fly to it and claim it. That player would use two NavComp cards' matching *landing code* numbers (the orange triangles, 1 and 3 in this case) to claim the planet.
We have marked the FAME resource on Higginston, so watch how Grimwold's claim of Higginston prompts an action for us.1planets_item_961e429e7a2f2c00planets_item_9 1
twistoffate1Because the FAME is our mark, we have the option of taking it or leaving it before Grimwold can claim a remaining resource on Higginston.
Most of the time, you'll want to *Take it,* and this is no exception. Take that sweet FAME! :)1take_it_id61e433216265910
twistoffate1Notice one of our markers got added to the Black Hole tracker because we took a resource with a black hole symbol on it (FAME).
!!! If the Black Hole tracker reaches 7, then the player(s) with the most markers on the tracker *lose their hidden resources,* which means fewer points at the end of the game!
Now let's fast-forward to the biggest move in the game: claiming a planet! :D1blackhole61e4335b23a2400
twistoffate1No more resources to scan for (indicated by the "x0"), so any player can travel to Elissana and claim it with landing codes 3 and 4. Let's claim it!
[tip] Claiming a planet not only gains you four points, but also allows you to harvest a resource you marked on that planet *and* an unmarked resource on that planet!
Click the two leftmost NavComp cards and the claim planet button (second from the top).1land_button61e4427d85d2c10myhand_item_7 17 myhand_item_14 18 planets_item_2 1
twistoffate1Because the marked ENERGEL[dark] resource has no black hole symbol, there is no risk to taking it, so let's add it to our collection!1take_it_id61e4428f896c610
twistoffate1The GEM[white] *does* have the black hole icon, though, so let's play it safe in this instance and select "None," rather than taking the free resource earned from claiming this planet.1no_claim_id61e452515b2da10resPlayPile_planets_item_2_item_1 1
twistoffate1And that's just about everything you need to know for Jump Gate, a fun space exploration/hand management/set collection game that's fairly easy to grasp and has a neat delayed gratification twist!
Thanks for following along and rating this tutorial, and I hope to meet you on one of these planets someday! :-D1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61e4546abcf2500
