In the wild rapids of the Niagara River, fearless canoers battle the water and each other to collect gems along the riverbank! Some emerge from the chaos wet but wealthy.
*[blue]And some go over the waterfall![/blue]*1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
Nekonyancer*And they really do go over the waterfall!* Seriously, check out the real board game. It's designed to lay on top of the outer box, with flaps hanging off of it.

When canoes go over the falls, *they actually fall!*

NekonyancerLet's get into the instructions.
Each player has [red]two canoes.[/red] These canoes will be sent down the river to pick up gems from five different [blue]gem deposits.[/blue] (See arrows)
When they have their loot, they must *fight the current* to make it back to where they started!3canoe_boat_5000canoe_boat_1 6 canoe_boat_2 6 canoe_boat_3 6 canoe_boat_4 6 canoe_boat_5 6 canoe_boat_6 6 gem_4 12 gem_10 12 gem_20 12 gem_25 11 gem_35 11
NekonyancerThis is your hand of [blue]paddle cards[/blue]. As you can see, it has number cards from 1 to 6 and a cloud card. The numbers control your canoes' movement!
[tip] All players have identical hands, though in their own colors!4myhand_item_14000paddlecard_89391174 6 paddlecard_84560177 6 myhand_item_14 11
NekonyancerEach turn, each player will select one paddle card and lay it *face-down*, showing only a paddle to other players.
Looks like our opponents have already selected [blue]theirs![/blue]5paddlecard_89391174000paddlecard_89391174 7 paddlecard_84560177 7
NekonyancerLet's start with a 2.
*Click on it to lay it down!*6myhand_item_10010myhand_item_10 16
NekonyancerThe circle next to Red's paddle card has his color in the middle with gray on the outside. That gray part is a life preserver, and it marks him as the [red]*first player*[/red].
That means he has to reveal his card and move his canoes first.
[tip] The first player will rotate each round!1firstPlayer62323918535d400
NekonyancerOur turn. We revealed our 2.
It says at the top that we have to choose a canoe to move. There's really no difference between the two canoes, so... eh, *let's click on the bottom one!*1canoe_boat_362324138c87a410
NekonyancerNow we have to select where we will move the canoe to. The available spaces are highlighted in [red]red.[/red]
Looks like we have only one option. It's two spaces away from the beach because we played a 2 this turn!
*Click on the red circle to move your canoe.*1canoe_boat_36232758f7009310
NekonyancerNice job! Our turn is over now. We can't move our other canoe right now because *you can only launch one canoe per turn.*
Next turn, we'll be able to move both our canoes at once!1canoe_boat_462327590932f100
NekonyancerGreen is about to take his turn. Watch carefully...2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62327590932f100
NekonyancerDid you see that? *Everyone's canoes got pushed downstream!*
The number of spaces the river is pushed is equal to the number of the lowest paddle card. The lowest number this turn was a *1*, so the river (and all the canoes in it) was pushed *1* space!1disc_b6233177ce0f9500
NekonyancerWell, there's actually a little bit more to that.
This track up here shows the *weather.* The weather affects the speed of the river. As you can see, the [blue]cloud marker[/blue] is currently on 0, so the weather isn't affecting anything yet.
So the river math was actually like this:
[red]*1 (lowest card) + 0 (weather) = 1 space pushed.*[/red]2cloud6233177ce0f9500cloud 7
NekonyancerAlso, did you notice that [red]these two river spaces[/red] did not move? The current pushed through the other side of the river instead!
[tip] *The current will switch paths for each space it is pushed.*
If it had been pushed three spaces, it would have pushed through the top 1 space, then bottom 1 space, then top 1 space.3disc_g6233177ce0f9500disc_b 14 disc_c 14 disc_f 11 disc_g 6 disc_i 6
NekonyancerAlright, next turn. First of all, note that the first player marker rotated, so we are the first player this turn.4firstPlayer6233177ce0f9500firstPlayer 7
NekonyancerFor the next turn, *let's put down a 3!*1myhand_item_116233499359d4210myhand_item_11 16
NekonyancerFirst, let's launch our other canoe! *Click on it!*1canoe_boat_4623383295f27310
NekonyancerWe played a *3*, so we have to move *3* spaces.
Our first canoe is already there, but that's not a problem.
[tip] [green]There is no limit to how many canoes can share a single space.[/green]
*Click on the red circle to move there!*1discselected_b6233832b8538510
NekonyancerGreat! Before we move our other canoe, let's learn about *loading gems.*
Loading gems costs *2 movement points* and must happen at the *beginning* or *end* of a canoe's movement.1canoe_boat_36233832ca58d500
NekonyancerFor example, if you had four movement,
[blue]the following 2 plans would work:[/blue]
2 (move) + 2 (load gem) = 4 total movement points
2 (load gem) + 2 (move) = 4 total movement points
[red]But this plan would NOT work:[/red]
1 (move) + 2 (load gem) + 1 (move) = 42disc_b6233832ca58d500
NekonyancerWe're at the right place to load violet gems. Let's try it!
*Click on the canoe we haven't moved yet this turn.*3disc_b6233832ca58d510canoe_boat_3 6
Nekonyancer*Now click load gem at the top.*2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6233833028a4a10
NekonyancerRemember, you must either use *ALL* your movement or *NONE* of it.
We just used 2 of our 3 movement by loading a gem. Let's use our remaining one movement to start paddling back to the beach!
*Click on the red circle to move.*1discselected_a62338331e915d10
Nekonyancer*Great job!*
By the way, there is only one access point each for violet *(1)*, clear *(2)*, and yellow *(3)* gem deposits.1gemplace_3_8623383358389000disc_b 17 disc_c 18 disc_d 19
NekonyancerBut there are *two* access points each for blue *(1)* and pink *(2)* gems, one on either side of the river!2disc_g623383358389000disc_e 17 disc_f 18 disc_g 17 disc_i 18
NekonyancerNext, Green has to make her move. Let's see what she does...3disc_c623383358389000
Nekonyancer*[red]Zounds! She STOLE our gem![/red]*
This is only possible when an *empty* canoe uses *all* its movement to move *upstream* and lands *exactly* on a space with another player's full canoe!
She didn't even have to spend 2 movement points to pick up the gem like we had to!1disc_a6233a5a5e2c5600
NekonyancerNext, Red revealed their paddle card to be a *cloud.*
That means they can change the weather.
Note the highlighted spaces; Red can only change it by one step on the track!
He's going to change the weather to *+1.* Hmm... how many spaces do you think the river will be pushed this round? *Press continue when you know!*1cloud6233a5a979c1000
Nekonyancer*That's right! Three spaces.*
*2* (lowest card played this turn) *+ 1* (because the weather track is on +1) *= 3 spaces.*1canoe_zone_a6233b4d868b9e00
NekonyancerNext round. *Let's play our 6.*1myhand_item_146233b4de208b010myhand_item_14 16
Nekonyancer*Let's move this canoe first.*1disc_b62345729e952210
Nekonyancer*Load a gem.*1disc_b6234fd5fe157e10
Nekonyancer*Now click here to use our remaining movement.*1discselected_f6234fd634273010
Nekonyancer*Now the other canoe!*1disc_a6234fd64b968510
Nekonyancer*Load a gem.*1canoe_zone_a6234fd66976ab10
Nekonyancer*And click here to move!*1discselected_g6234fd6808ca810
NekonyancerGreat job! Let's go through just one more turn.
*Let's use our 4.*1myhand_item_126234fd693b5f310myhand_item_12 16
Nekonyancer*Select this canoe.*1disc_f6235ed301264210
NekonyancerNote that at the top, we have an option to *unload a gem.* Unloading a gem costs 2 movement, just like loading one. This can only be done at a gem deposit, but not the same one the gem came from.
As you might expect, we almost never want to unload gems. :)1disc_f6235fbb99530200
Nekonyancer*Click here to move to the beach!*2discselected_06235fbb99530210
Nekonyancer*Now select the other canoe...*1disc_g6235fbbab5c7110
Nekonyancer*And move to the beach!*1discselected_06235fbbd363ee10
NekonyancerThe gems are now in our *[red]inventory![/red]*
1player_collection_88346952_item_286235fbbe4c7e400player_name_88346952 6
Nekonyancer[blue]*We're almost done.*[/blue]
Play will continue the way you've seen. When all players have used all the tiles in their hands, they'll pick all their tiles up again.
Eventually, someone will collect enough gems to trigger the end of the game.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6235fbbe4c7e400
NekonyancerThe end of the game will be triggered when one player...
*- has one gem of each of the five colors*
OR
*- has four gems of ONE color*
OR
*- has seven gems.*3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6235fbbe4c7e400
NekonyancerWhen the end is triggered, the round has to finish up. If only one player has met one of the aforementioned conditions, *that player is the winner!*
If multiple players have game-winning gem combinations, then the *values* of their gems are counted up as the tiebreaker. The harder the gem is to harvest, the more it's worth!
Values:
Violet: 1
Clear: 2
Yellow: 3
Blue: 4
Pink: 54disc_i6235fbbe4c7e400
NekonyancerThere's just one more thing I have to mention: *losing your canoe over the falls!*
When this happens, *the canoe is lost*, along with any cargo it may have been carrying.
You can get the canoe back, but only by paying one gem from your inventory. The canoe comes back into play on a beach, and the gem you pay goes back into the deposit of the appropriate color.5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6235fbbe4c7e400
NekonyancerIf you lose both of your canoes, then the game will take pity on you and let you get one canoe back for free.
But still, um... try not to let that happen. :)6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6235fbbe4c7e400
Nekonyancer[blue]*And that's everything!* Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Niagara![/blue]
If you have any comments or questions, don't hesitate to send me, *Nekonyancer*, a message!
Have fun! :)7archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6235fbbe4c7e400
