watsuHi there, Pente is a stone placing game like gomoku.
There are two different ways to win at Pente:
Capture 5 (or more) pairs of your opponent's stones. OR
Line up 5 (or more) of your stones next to each other
horizontally, vertically or diagonally.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
watsuMake sure to check the variants and number of player seats available in a game before you join!(default settings are shown in this game).1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61a8d71868af700
watsuThis game was played with the swap 2 opening rule. White (first player) begins the game and (s)he puts two white stones and one black stone anywhere on the board.
1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61a8d71aaae7f00
watsuNow, black (second player) can choose between these 3 options:
1. Swap colors and play the white stones.
2. Continue to play as black and play a stone.
3. Add one black stone and one white stone to the board and let white (first player) choose which color (s)he wishes to play.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61a8d71cbd08500
watsuIn this game, the positon is highly favorable for black, so black chose option 2. (continue to play as black).2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61a8d71cbd08500
watsuIn friendly games people often play with a rule called Pro, which has white play his/her first stone in the center of the board and his/her second stone at least three intersections away from the first stone. The Pro rules still favor white at higher skill levels, so swap variants are fairer.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61a8d71cbd08500
watsuUnlike in gomoku, except in the case of a few variants such as the self capture variant, draws are not an expected outcome for Pente games. Positions will always favor one player or the other, but the advantage for one side in a swap or swap2 game can be much less clear than with Pro rules.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61a8d71cbd08500
watsuBlack chooses to play a stone at K12, capturing white's pair. Black now has a 2 stone advantage over white as well as a captured pair and should win the game unless he/she makes one or more mistakes during the game. Since Pente is often a game decided by the last mistake in the game, let's continue from this position despite how bad things look right now for white.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61a8d73863a2500
watsuBlack has made an unblocked 3 threat, which if not addressed can be made into an unblocked 4. On black's next move, an unblocked 4 can be made into a 5. Block black's 3 at I101intersection_8_961a8d7d8ec15210intersection_8_9 1
watsuBlack has made a 4 and will win on his/her next move unless you play at I15.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61a8d7f685c3610intersection_8_14 1
watsuBlack has made a mistake and allowed you to create a winning threat at J10!1gmk_game_area61a8d80c84c2610intersection_9_9 1
watsuCreate an unblocked 3 threat by playing to K11. Note that playing a second stone of yours in between 2 of your opponent's stones doesn't result in a capture of your stones unless the self capture rule is enabled.1intersection_10_1061a8d81be782310intersection_10_10 1
watsuBlack has chosen to create a stronger threat than your 3 rather than block it, but must eventually address your 3 unless s(he) can continue to create stronger threats.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61a8d84dba73100

watsuCreate a winning threat by playing to H10. Note that a better move would be to play to K13 before playing H10. We'll see why in a minute.1gmk_game_area61a8d86b1d04710intersection_7_9 1
watsuPlay a stone to K13, creating two diagonal unblocked 3s.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61a8d8779260b10intersection_10_12 1
watsuNote here that in gomoku white has a winning position with two open 3s, but that in Pente black has a capture at L14 which removes the white stone at J12 which is blocking his/her winning threat of playing at J12 on the next move. If white had played K13 before playing H10, black wouldn't have had the option to play I11, because white could play G10 instead of H10 capturing black on the next move.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61a8d879b590800
watsuBlack makes a mistake here by not playing to I11 and threatening to capture at L14, so white can now claim his/her win in the same board position as if (s)he had played the stones in the order K13 before H10.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61a8d887db7d700
watsuPlay a stone to I11 to create an open 4.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61a8d88c7e7b210intersection_8_10 1
watsuWhite can create a winning position by playing either back to K13 or G9. Play a stone to K13. 1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61a8d8a151bca10intersection_10_12 1
watsuPlay a stone to G9 to claim your victory. Congratulations! You are now ready to play Pente.1archiveCommentElementPointerTargetInner61a8d8b25d67b10intersection_6_8 1
