u-topia!!! (For programming reasons, it is not possible to draw dotted lines on the board or indicate them with arrows. For the tutorial, run the program with the [red]*option* "*Display Coordinates*"[/red] set to [red]"*Enabled*"[/red].)
Welcome to Bug!
Bug is a pure strategy game, played with white and black stones on any hexagonal tiling.
1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
u-topiaFirst, let me explain what a "bug" is, which is also the title of the game.
1) A bug is an entire group of connected, same-color stones on the board. A single stone is also a bug.
2) The size of a bug is the number of stones it contains.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
u-topiaThe board starts empty. Black begins the game by placing one black stone on any empty space. Then, starting with White, the players take turns.
Here, black is opponent and white is you.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
u-topiaEach turn has 3 steps, taken in order: 1) Grow, 2) Eat, 3) Bonus Grow
3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6158559020e1300
u-topia*1) Grow*:
Place a stone on an empty space to either start a new bug or grow one of your preexisting bugs by one stone. You may not merge bugs, and you may not grow a bug to be larger than the largest bug on the board (regardless of color) prior to placement.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6158559020e1300
u-topia*2) Eat*:
All your bugs which are adjacent to one or more enemy bugs of the same shape (but not necessarily the same orientation) must eat (capture) those enemy bugs. Note mirror-image bugs count as the same shape.
5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6158559020e1300
u-topia*3) Bonus Grow*:
Increase the size of each of your bugs that ate, by exactly 1, by placing a stone of your color on any empty space adjacent to each such bug.6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6158559020e1300
u-topiaIt's your turn.
*Action*: [red]*Place 3:1*[/red] and see what happens.19archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6158559020e1310
u-topiaWhite with 3:1 must eat because it is the same shape as and adjacent to Black with 2:2.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment615855ac62f9500
u-topiaNow that you have eaten the black, you need to make it grow.
*Action*: [red]*Place 2:1*[/red] and let the bonus grow to a size-2.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment615855ac66eba10
u-topiaGreat! The white bug has now grown to size-2!1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment615855b36760700
u-topiaI think you can eat black again.
*Action*: [red]*Place 2:3*[/red]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment615855ba8292710
u-topiaIt cannot be placed in 2:2 or 3:2 because it will merge with other bugs.
*Action*: [red]*Place 3:3*[/red] and let it grow.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment615855cc4703910
u-topiaRecheck the *placement rules*.
Place a stone on an empty space to either start a new bug or grow one of your preexisting bugs by one stone. You may not merge bugs, and you may not grow a bug to be larger than the largest bug on the board (regardless of color) prior to placement.
...You can only place it in three places: 0:2, 0:3, and 0:4.
*Action*: [red]*Place 0:3*[/red]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment615855d7ce59410
u-topiaBlack size-2 is adjacent to the same shape. And two white size-2 bugs at the same time! In such a case, the black must eat the two whites at the same time. But it will only grow once.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment615855ed43c9f00
u-topiaWhite has been reduced from the board. However, the game is just beginning!
*Action*: [red]*Place 1:2*[/red]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment615855f00d99310
u-topia*Action*: [red]*Place 0:2*[/red]
Adjacent to black at size-3. What do you think will happen?1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6158560b1597e10
u-topiaThe white on the left and the black on the right are adjacent to each other with the same size-3. But you can't eat this black one because of its different shape.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61585613b186f00
u-topiaWhere should you put it? Anyway...
*Action*: [red]*Place 2:3*[/red]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6158561ce9d0a10
u-topiaBlack is now adjacent to white in the same shape. Normally, the size-1 black bug would eat the size-1 white bug adjacent to it. However, there’s no way for the black bug to grow without merging with another black bug after eating. Therefore, the black bug doesn’t eat.
1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6158562d5d73c00
u-topia*Action*: [red]*Place 2:0*[/red] and eat two black!4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6158562d67a7d10
u-topiaNice! You could eat two of them at the same time.
*Action*: [red]*Place 3:0*[/red]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6158563a6c5f910
u-topiaThe 2:3 white, unrelated to the stone you placed this turn, ate the 2:4 black! After the stone you placed this turn have been dealt with...
1) They must be adjacent to each other in the same shape.
2) There is free space for growth.
Since these two conditions were met, 2:3 white ate black.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment615856400c46f00
u-topiaA size-3 black bug eats a size-3 white bug, then grows to size-4, then eats a size-4 white bug, then grows to size-5, all in one turn. This kind of chain allows you to eat more of opponent's bugs in one turn.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment615856ef9743000
u-topiaA lot of white was eaten. But you can still make up for it! Let's go for it!
*Action*: [red]*Place 2:3*[/red]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment615856efa123710
u-topiaFinally, I'll explain the [red]*victory conditions of this game*[/red].
The first player who [red]*CANNOT*[/red] place a stone in the placement step [red]*WINS*[/red]. That is: you win if you’ve filled the ecosystem with your bugs so much you can no longer expand.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6158570354bda00
u-topiaMaking a big bug doesn't always give you an advantage.
*Action*: [red]*Place 2:0*[/red]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6158570354bda10
u-topia*Action*: [red]*Place 3:1*[/red] and eat the black.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6158574a3ec2a10
u-topiaThe board is filling up. The game is almost over.
*Action*: [red]*Place 1:4*[/red] and make it size-2.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6158575d2764e10
u-topiaOops, *this is an important phase*.
You can place...4:2, 3:3, or 2:4.
Two of the three locations will lead to you winning.
The other is going straight to defeat.
[red]*Let's think about it. Where do you think it should be placed?*[/red]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61585774c02a900
u-topiaHave you thought about it?2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61585774c02a900
u-topiaHere are the correct answers.
[red]*case:1) White 4:2, Black 2:4...You WIN!*
*case:2) White 3:3, Black 2:4...You WIN!*[/red]
[blue]*case:3) White 2:4...You LOSE!*[/blue] (Black cannot be placed.)
Was your answer correct?3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61585774c02a900
u-topia*Action*: [red]*Place 3:3*[/red] here!
Now you're going to win!4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61585774c02a910
u-topiaCongratulations! White won the game because you could no longer be placed anywhere! (No matter where you put it, it will merge with other bugs!)1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment615857849c2db00
u-topiaNow you are ready to play the Bug! Next time, try playing with people from all over the world on your own.
Thanks for watching.
